In 2023, a floating photovoltaic system was installed on a quarry pond at a gravel works in Bensheim and put into operation at the beginning of 2024. The system generates an impressive output of 1 MW on a comparatively small area of 0.6 hectares. By installing it on the water, the modules are cooled, which leads to higher efficiency and a longer service life for the system. In addition, the covering of the lake reduces water evaporation and has a positive effect on the local microclimate.
With 1 MW, the plant makes a significant contribution to the gravel plant‘s electricity supply and supports the reduction of CO2 emissions through the use of renewable energies.
The utilisation of the quarry pond for the PV system is a key example of how existing industrial areas can be used sustainably and efficiently without additional land consumption. The system was installed in just a few weeks thanks to the simple installation of the Intech floaters.
Special features:
- Efficient utilisation of the water surface
- The natural cooling of the water increases the performance of the PV modules
- Taking over a significant part of the gravel plant‘s power supply
